sEPTEMBER 4, 2021

Find out how Baby Yoda was created. VFXRIO offers another must-see keynote, and this time completely live. If you loved the droids, creatures and spaceships in The Mandalorian, register at www.vfxrio.com.br to watch Industrial Light & Magic animation supervisor Hal Hickel's keynote on The Mandalorian on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. (Italian time).

Hal Hickel is the animation supervisor on The Mandalorian. In the talk he will reveal how the visual effects for the second season of The Mandalorian were created and talk about the making-of of some of the series' most iconic characters such as Baby Yoda (Grogu) and the Dragon Krayt.

Hal Hickel's keynote will not be recorded, at the artist's request.

The event is live on VFXRIO, a unique opportunity to attend a masterclass by one of the big names in animation for action films.

Matteo Moriconi, director of VFXRIO, said, "George Lucas' Industrial Light & Magic was the first production company to create large-scale visual effects. Star Wars is the seminal universe of an entire industry. Hal Hickel's performance will not be recorded and will therefore be unique. Sharing know-how at this level allows us to fulfill our mission and help our international community of VFX artists and specialists."

Hal Hickel joined Industrial Light & Magic in 1996 as an animator for The Lost World: Jurassic Park. In his next production, he was promoted to lead animator and given responsibility for the animation of several characters in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. In 2000, Hickel was promoted to animation supervisor, working with multiple Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor Dennis Muren on Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. His particular interest in animation lies in the challenge of integrating fantastic characters and creatures into live-action films. Hickel went on to oversee animation work on Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones, Iron Man and the first three films in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. In 2007, his work on Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was honored with an Academy Award® for Outstanding Achievement in Visual Effects and BAFTA for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.

Hickel was the animation supervisor on Guillermo del Toro's sci-fi epic, Pacific Rim, for which he received his fifth BAFTA nomination and a Visual Effects Society nomination for special effects. Previously, he was the animation director of ILM's first animated film, Rango, which received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. In 2016, Hickel took on the task of animating the epic battle between orcs and humans in Warcraft. He was animation supervisor in a galaxy far, far away for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which earned him Oscar, BAFTA and VES award nominations for visual effects.

More recently, he supervised animation on the train robbery sequence in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and is now animation supervisor for Lucasfilm's first Star Wars live action television show, The Mandalorian.
